Depositional Conditions of Cretaceous Ironstones Deposit in the Chulym-Yenisey Basin (Western Siberia)

This study reconstructs the depositional conditions of ironstones within Chulym-Yenisey basin and assesses iron source. The detrital minerals studied deposits include quartz feldspar. authigenic are goethite, siderite, aragonite, dolomite, calcite, apatite, barite, pyrite. clay components chlorite group (possible chamosite), nontronite, kaolinite, illite, beidellite. Local bacterial sulfate reduction led to formation pyrite framboids in siltstone layers. subsequent diagenetic promoted chamosite from siderite. goethite precipitation occurred an oxidic aqueous environment. Cretaceous continental sediments Ilek Kia Formations Chulym-Yenisei depression consist fine- medium-grained, cross-stratified, poorly sorted litho-feldspatho-quartzose sandstones fluvial channel origin alternating with bluish-gray siltstones floodplain–lacustrine–bog origin. Thin layers iron-bearing rocks formed meromictic waters. changes geochemical proxies demonstrate fluctuations paleoenvironmental sequence. Siltstones under humid arid conditions, respectively. primary source for was determined as volcanogenic igneous Altai-Sayan mountainous region.
